01.

Background

Ritual Specialty Coffee is one of Maputo's first specialty coffee shops and is known for its focus on quality coffee and a creative community. As the business grew, it needed packaging that reflected the same experience customers associate with the café.

02.

Challenge

Ritual wanted its first custom coffee bag to stand out on the shelf while remaining true to the character of the brand. The packaging needed to communicate essential product information, reinforce the shop's identity and create a stronger connection between the café and the coffee customers take home.

Before Decoder, much of the assessment process relied on manual administration. Employees had to be individually added to the system, permissions were managed one person at a time, and large assessment campaigns became increasingly time-consuming as organizations grew. To make matters more complex, the platform needed to satisfy enterprise-grade security standards for banking clients while remaining intuitive enough for hundreds of employees completing assessments across different devices.

03.

Our Solution

We designed a label inspired by Ritual's signature mural, incorporating hand-drawn illustrations from the café into the packaging. Alongside the visual identity, we created a clear information hierarchy that highlights the coffee's origin, processing method, roast level and flavor notes, making it easier for customers to understand the product at a glance.

We designed and developed a secure assessment platform that allowed employees to complete personalized evaluations, schedule interviews, and manage their profiles from any device. Beyond the original brief, we introduced bulk user management through CSV imports, allowing administrators to onboard entire organizations at once, assign roles automatically, and manage permissions and assessments in groups instead of individually. What previously required hours of repetitive administrative work became a process that could be completed in minutes.

04.

Design

The goal was to make the packaging feel like an extension of the café rather than a separate product. By bringing elements of the physical space onto the coffee bag, we aimed to create a consistent brand experience.

We also prioritized clarity, ensuring key product information could be quickly scanned.

A clean, modular interface prioritizing clarity, consistency and efficient task completion. Every workflow was intentionally simplified to respect the user's time. Employees could quickly find and complete assessments, while administrators could confidently manage hundreds of participants without unnecessary complexity. The visual language balanced professionalism with warmth, using gradients, approachable colors, and clear interactions to make an otherwise formal assessment experience feel welcoming.

05.

Impact

The clearer visual hierarchy made the coffee’s value more visible on shelf, improving brand recognition and differentiation within Mozambique’s competitive coffee shop scene.

By clearly surfacing the country of origin and flavor notes, the packaging reduced decision friction for first-time buyers and reinforced Ritual’s positioning as a leading specialty coffee brand in Mozambique.
